Exams Officers, Managers and what is the the Future of The Profession?

The History of the Exams Officer Role.

Over 20 years ago, a national reform changed the landscape of education.

The Remodelling the School Workforce initiative, part of the National Agreement on Raising Standards and Tackling Workload (2003), was designed to reduce teacher workload and raise standards. It led to the creation of new support roles, including the Exams Officer.

Fast forward to today and we are seeing conversations about rebranding these roles as Exams Managers.

But what happens in centres where that title already exists – they can line manage EO’s.
And what about Further Education, where roles often look very different?

It is an important discussion but perhaps the bigger question is this:

Where is the focus on funding to ensure all exams staff are recognised and paid fairly for the vital work they do?

In our latest newsletter, we take a deeper look at:

  • The history behind the exams officer role

  • Why simply changing titles is not enough

  • How the sector can push for greater recognition and funding

  • A call to raise the profile of all exams staff, no matter their title

💡 It is time to move from workforce reform to workforce recognition.
